Born of Gold · 1828

The River That Started America’s Gold Rush

In 1828, gold was discovered in the hills above the Chestatee River — sparking America’s first major gold rush, 21 years before the California rush that history better remembers. The Chestatee River was ground zero.

Full History →

“There’s gold in them thar hills!” — The legendary rallying cry born from the Georgia mountains, circa 1829, heard first along the banks of the Chestatee River.

Pre-1830s

Cherokee Heritage

The Chestatee River takes its name from the Cherokee language — its exact meaning debated, but its significance undeniable. For generations, the Cherokee people hunted, fished, and traveled along these mountain waters. The Trail of Tears in 1838 forced them from their homeland.

1828 – 1861

The Georgia Gold Rush

Gold discovered in 1828 near Dahlonega triggered the first major American gold rush. Dahlonega boomed as the epicenter. The U.S. Branch Mint at Dahlonega, operating 1838–1861, coined more than $6 million in gold — all of it from the mountains above the Chestatee.

Today

A Living River

The Chestatee flows on — clear, cold, and wild. Georgia DNR manages it as premier trout water. Anglers, kayakers, and swimmers share these mountain currents today. The gold rush towns are gone, but the river remains eternal, feeding Lake Lanier and carrying its history to the sea.
