Most Americans learned about the California Gold Rush of 1849. Few know that the first major gold rush in U.S. history happened 21 years earlier on the Chestatee River near Dahlonega, Georgia.
Discovery: 1828
In 1828, Benjamin Parks was deer hunting above the Chestatee River when he noticed the glint of gold. Within weeks, thousands of prospectors flooded into Lumpkin County.
The Cherokee Nation and the Gold Rush
The gold discovery happened on Cherokee territory. Georgia passed laws extending state jurisdiction over Cherokee land in 1828. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled twice in favor of the Cherokee Nation — rulings President Andrew Jackson ignored.
The Dahlonega Mint (1838-1861)
The federal government established a branch mint in Dahlonega in 1838 — the only U.S. Mint ever in the South. The mint struck over 1.4 million gold coins with the D mint mark worth approximately million.
The Gold Rush Legacy Today
The Dahlonega Gold Museum tells the full story. Consolidated Gold Mine offers underground tours. The Chestatee River still carries gold in its gravels.
